Maybe not the main reason to visit SIngapore, but a must do when you are there. Go to the legendary Raffles Hotel and have at least one Singapore Sling. This drink was invented here. The first goes down like coolaid. The second you begin to realize “hey this has some alcohol in it” and after the third you begin to see cartoons.
Singapore is a very modern and cosmopolitan city. It is also perhaps the cleanest city I have had the pleasure of visiting.
Singapore was our start and stopping point on our cruise.
Every tourist who visits Singapore will be drawn to this site, the Merlion. Half mermaid, half lion, it is the official symbol for the city.
These three buildings are multi-purpose office, apartments and a five star hotel. The structure on top resembles a cruiseliner and has a horizon pool. I had to take this shot to demonstrate that idiots with selfie sticks are everywhere now.
The best beer in Singapore is Tiger beer. It has been brewed there for almost a hundred years. The people who founded the company really liked Heineken and brought brewers from Holland to teach them how to make a tropical version of their beer.
At the end of the tour they teach you how to properly draw a draft beer. Hey, I went to college, I know how to do that. But it was a fun lesson and you got to drink the fresh brew.
Singapore has a large Malaysian population. We went to a Malaysian restaurant and had perhaps the best meal, on or off the ship, we had all week. I have no idea what it all was, but it was really tasty.
Of course this great city has more than brew and slings.
Singapore boasts a world class orchid garden which can take hours to visit. Unfortunately we only had a half hour, but we loved it.
Just a sample!
Singapore is one of those airline hub cities for international flyers. It has an extremely efficient airport. If you are passing through, be sure to let your jet lag catch up with you and spend a couple days in this great city. And while you are there, visit Raffles and have a sling, or two or three.
